Is it Worth Getting High-End Headphones?

With some headphones costing up to £1,500, the question of whether it is worth putting down that sort of money for something which you can buy for less than £20 crops up time and time again. One thing everyone who looks into this matter agrees with is that not every expensive pair of headphones are worth the price being asked for it. In most of those cases, what you’re really paying for is the brand. That doesn’t mean that there is absolutely no difference between low-end and high-end headphones, and certainly spending more can help you to avoid a few common problems. So let’s have a bit of a look at the reasons for the high price of higher end headphones, and what might make it worth your while to spend the extra cash.

Budget Can be Good, but High-End is Better

A good general rule when it comes to most headphones is that you will get a better quality of sound when you pay more for them. This isn’t just a thing restricted to the hard-core music lover, either. There is a very clear difference in quality of sound between a good $20 pair of headphones and a good $200 pair. So clear that anyone can tell within moments of listening.

Unfortunately, price alone can’t indicate quality. It would be a much simpler world if it did. There is good quality to be found at every price range, but the bar is definitely moved higher when the price goes up.

Higher Price, Better Audio

This is the reason people pay more. Not just for headphones, but let’s restrict this discussion to them. More expensive headphones can sound a lot better. This means that the music you are listening to sounds clearer and crisper, without muddy bass and tinny highs.

Another advantage to the higher-end headphones is that they usually produce a better soundstage. This isn’t something most people know all that much about – but it’s the ability to close your eyes and ‘feel’ that you are listening to the music in person, live. It lets you pick out each of the instruments and the different voices (if there’s more than one singer).

Cheaper headphones usually give a duller, more lifeless sound. Even the best pair of budget headphones can’t hold a candle to the quality of sound that an average pair of more expensive ones.

Spend More, Get More

If you are spending a few hundred dollars on a pair of headphones, it is reasonable to assume that you will get more than just the headphones themselves. They are usually more solid and made of a much better quality of material – which means that they have the additional advantage of lasting longer than their cheaper competitors.

Better still, higher-end headphones come with additional features. They include noise cancellation, wireless audio, the ability to be folded for easy storage. There is no doubt that an expensive pair of headphones should be better equipped to take a few knocks and bumps than the cheaper headphones can.

Paying more also gets you a bit more comfort – ear-pad coverings which feel solidly attached to the headphones, tips which can be easily replaced, and plastic which doesn’t sound like it might crack each time you have to adjust the fit of them. For those who really want to look good more than to keep funds in their wallets, you can get gold-plated connectors and headbands which are made of patent leather, but they do absolutely nothing to improve the sound, and when it comes to headphones, it’s sound quality which is king.

How do You Listen?

This is the question you really need to answer if you are ever going to make an informed decision on whether it is worth you paying more for higher-end headphones. If you only listen to music with headphones when you’re commuting, then the cheaper headphones will be absolutely fine for your needs, and are probably a better idea. If, on the other hand, you listen at home or in quiet environments, then get yourself a better pair so that you can really enjoy the experience.

Bottom Line: Are They Worth It?

Well, yes. They are. But what you need to decide is if they are worth it to you. Everyone has their own priorities, and I find this is never more true when it comes to the music they enjoy and how they prefer to listen to it.

In the end, the best advice is to do your homework before you put any sort of cash down for a set of headphones. Then make sure that you get the headphones which work best for how you use them, and for whatever your budget is.

Whatever headphones you end up buying should be based on your personal habits, and what you need the headphones for, not on reviews or fashion.
